Which will be carried over by the Autumn breeze?"

Our life will always be at a constant risk. That’s why it’s never too late to be ready for disasters and calamities. I am beyond thankful I was able to attend the DRRM seminar and we were taught on how to cope up with vulnerabilities and be prepared for disasters. We were taught on how we can put our life at risk reduction so we were trained to do first aid and basic life support. Philippine disaster is way over our reach because our country is located at the Pacific Ring of Fire, which is why our country is at high risk of Volcanic Eruptions, Earthquakes, and other earth disasters. We will never be 100% ready. But I am glad that Filipinos are now becoming more aware of what might and what will happen to our country when a disaster came in and more informed with how they will handle it.

We don’t just have to know the issues of disasters in our country, but we MUST be aware of it. We are responsible with our own life. We must inform ourselves and others as well. By addressing the issues of disasters in our country, in that way, we might save a life.

My group mates and I came from different places, but what really shocked me is that most of the location of our community is located near the fault line. We were able to share different vulnerabilities and hazards and we were also able to think of how we would assess the situation. I realized that it was really a great time and opportunity to reflect on how dangerous our life will be if we were not oriented about this. And I would also like to thank UST NSTP for conducting such program.

At first, I thought our barangay don’t have any DRRM Plan. But when I asked them about this, they were able to answer right away. Every barangay has DRRM Plan. They are aware and prepared with this kind of matter. They handed me a Hazard and Resource Map and explained to me how it works. I was impressed because it seems like they study and planned well, just in case a student like me, would ask.

There is a location for the evacuations and health center for emergency purposes. Here are the photos:

They told me, too, that our barangay is prone to fire. We belong in San Juan area that’s why our barangay has low chance of flood or any risk of disaster. The officials focus on evacuation, they say, for the family who will be victims of fire.

Last Sunday, December 5, 2015, a fire was caught on Third West Crame at 3am. It started with one house and spread to the near houses that is build up by wood. This is why our barangay is prone to fire accidents; houses are close to each other and is build up by woods. It’s kind of disappointing that I don’t see the evidences of the DRRM Plan because people/families stay outside or just stayed in a small tent. But I still do hope our barangay offers them something to recover.

As a Filipino, I must be aware of the first aid or emergency treatment to be applied to an individual or community that is affected by major calamity. I, when given a chance, should participate in the government campaign and drills. I should always prepare and must have a “Go-bag” for emergency purposes. I am responsible for my own safety that’s why I, when needed, will take address the different vulnerabilities to increase the capacities of my own community since I have knowledge about it already.

There is no perfect time to address the issue, the only best time is today. Always be aware. The one who is responsible to address the issue are the ones that should be involved. They should give full details and information about the issues, and must not give false facts about it. Their data about the issue could either put in danger or save a life of a person that’s why people who are pledge to do so should orient those who are not capable of knowing.

Again, I really want to thank UST NSTP for giving me a chance to be aware of these matter. Now I can share it and let people know about it too.
